Rooted in America.
Committed to the ummah.

We are a diverse community of Muslims, the majority of whom embraced Islam as their way of life and Pittsburgh as their home. In 2006, we established The Light of the Age Mosque in a small rented building on the North Side of Pittsburgh. This humble mosque has been our Rabat, or fortification, ever since—a place of refuge, serenity, and where we find spiritual strength through community and prayer.

Our leadership is made up of converts who are rooted in the American context, committed to building on the accomplishments of our spiritual forebears in order to develop the next generation to serve Islam in America. At our new hub, we hope to establish a sustainable and dynamic spiritual sanctuary that addresses the evolving needs of future generations of American Muslims.

Anisa Kanbour’s legacy

Over half a century ago, Anisa Kanbour embarked on a remarkable journey to America, a journey that would ultimately shape not only her own life but leave an indelible mark on the vibrant tapestry of Pittsburgh's Muslim community. Through unwavering determination and a thirst for knowledge, she transcended the challenges of immigration, forging a path that led her to become a distinguished pathologist and the esteemed Medical Director of the Anisa I. Kanbour School of Cytology at University of Pittsburgh Department of Pathology.

However, Anisa's legacy extends far beyond her professional achievements. She was not just a success story; she was a passionate advocate for her fellow Muslims in Pittsburgh. As the city's Muslim community began to flourish, she stood as a steadfast pillar of support, particularly for the emerging mosques. When Anisa Kanbour passed away, she left behind a heartfelt wish — a gift that would forever change the landscape of Pittsburgh.  Masjid Anisa, the city's inaugural purpose-built mosque, was born, providing a sacred space for generations to come, and weaving her legacy into the very fabric of Pittsburgh's diverse and flourishing community.
